A Cumbrian communications professional has been shortlisted for an international award for her work to promote diversity within science and engineering.
Ruth Hutchison has been recognised by French organisation Femme Energia for her work to help build a diverse workforce across Cumbria.
As a founding member of the Women in Nuclear Cumbria branch and media officer for Sellafield Ltd, Ruth has used her role to help encourage a more diverse industry in the region.
Femme Energia recognises those who have used their profession to promote gender issues across the globe.
Adrienne Kelbie, WiN UK patron and chief executive officer of the Office for Nuclear Regulation, said: “It is refreshing to see different role models coming forward in our industry, showcasing the many different skills that are needed to deliver in the nuclear industry.
“Ruth has galvanised the community with her innovative engagement techniques and I am delighted to see her shortlisted for this prestigious international award.”
Claire Gallery-Strong, WiN Cumbria chair, said: “Ruth has brought her immense skills set in communication, energy, commitment and passion to out the spotlight not only on scientists, engineers, but also female leaders and entrepreneurs in Cumbria.
“This been integral to the success of the dynamic WiN Cumbria team and I’m delighted Ruth’s dedication has been recognised, while also putting Cumbria on the international stage.
“Ruth not only provides communications expertise but is also a personal role model, who volunteers her time to drive gender issues for our industry. I am delighted to see that communication is recognised as a vital contributor to our mission.”
The winners will be announced at a ceremony in October.
Ruth said: “I’m delighted with the nomination, but it is very much a reflection of the work of the WiN Cumbria team and our members, who range from scientists, engineers, apprentices, teachers, parents, mentor, managers and business owners.
“I’m very lucky to be in a position to that allows me to share the stories of these positive role models throughout Cumbria.”
